The Australian Aged Care Collaboration has invited political leaders from major parties, or their representatives, to address an online meeting that already has more than 600 RSVPs from various workers, providers and families.
Aged care reform has emerged as a key issue this election and the event is a prime chance for parties to answer questions and respond to calls for workforce reform.
There has been growing recognition that older Australians cannot get the best available care without respect and support for aged care workers.
Despite promising billions since the Royal Commission report, both parties must provide more detailed plans for how they will attract more nurses and aged care workers to the sector, and retain and upskill the existing workforce.
The Australian Aged Care Collaboration (AACC) is calling for:
- A “workforce partnership supplement”;
- A minimum wage increase for aged care workers by funding the Fair Work Commission work value case, and award wage increases from July 2022; and
- A commitment to a multidisciplinary workforce by putting an allied health needs assessment and funding model in place by July 2024.
Australians have made it clear – they expect quality aged care. This event is an important opportunity for the community to hear the vision for how the parties will fund and deliver that care if they form the next government.
